چکیده

Swimming atamina and survival in reletion to severe rtrees (swimmlng fatipue) were ameased in Pteah water and ssawater during varioua stages of the parr-amolt transformation for both 0-age and yearling coho salmon (Oncorhynchw kisutch). It waa determined that coho salmon normally experience transient reductions in ntarnina when ttanrfsrred directly to seawater. Coho salmon a h experience tranoient reductions in their ability to survive severe physical atreaa (swimming fatigue) at direct aeawater entry. Strese survival during the first week of rsawater residence was significantly correlated to the utatu~ of smoltification, with the maximum ability to survive rtreaa coinciding with the freshwater developmental peaks of both p lume thyroxine (T,) and gill Na+-K+ ATPaps.

Differential regulation of sodium-potassium pump isoforms during smolt development and seawater exposure of Atlantic salmon.

Freshwater and seawater isoforms of the alpha subunit of Na(+)/K(+)-ATPase (NKA) have previously been identified in gill ionocytes of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). In the present study we examine the abundance and cellular localization of these isoforms during the parr-smolt transformation, a developmental process that is preparatory for seawater entry. The abundance of NKAα1a was lower in smo...

Parr–smolt transformation and dietary vegetable lipids affect intestinal nutrient uptake, barrier function and plasma cortisol levels in Atlantic salmon

For Atlantic salmon, the gastrointestinal tract is the site of food digestion and nutrient uptake, a regulatory site for ion and water balance as well as a barrier against invading pathogens. During the parr–smolt transformation and subsequent seawater (SW) transfer, major changes occur in the intestine. A global shortage of fish oils (FO) for feed production is estimated to appear within a few...

Endocrine disruption of parr-smolt transformation and seawater tolerance of Atlantic salmon by 4-nonylphenol and 17beta-estradiol.

Sex steroids are known to interfere with the parr-smolt transformation of anadromous salmonids, and environmental estrogens such as nonylphenol have recently been implicated in reduced returns of Atlantic salmon in the wild. To determine the endocrine pathways by which estrogenic compounds affect smolt development and seawater tolerance, groups of juvenile Atlantic salmon were injected with one...

A molecular mechanism for variations in muscle function in rainbow trout.

Salmonids undergo a developmental transition from parr to smolt that involves a number of physiological and morphological changes. In recent years, my laboratory has studied shifts in red muscle function at this parr-smolt transformation (PST) in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Parr red muscle has faster contraction kinetics than smolts, including faster rates of activation and relaxation a...

Intestinal transport mechanisms and plasma cortisol levels during normal and out-of-season parr–smolt transformation of Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar

The intestine is one of the major osmoregulatory organs in fish. During the salmon parr–smolt transformation, the intestine must change its functions from the freshwater (FW) role of preventing water inflow, to the seawater (SW) role of actively absorbing ions and water. This development can be assessed as an increased intestinal fluid transport (Jv) during the parr– smolt transformation. The d...
